You’re Not Alone If…

Technology Moved Faster Than Your Coverage Did

Most transportation and logistics companies we talk to haven’t thought about cyber risk until something already went wrong, or almost did.

You store customer data (names, payment info, maybe health records) and you’re not sure what your real exposure is if it’s breached.

You accept online payments or run point-of-sale systems, but have never confirmed whether a payment compromise is actually covered.

You’ve never been walked through what a ransomware attack would actually cost you in downtime, recovery, and lost business.

Your current policy, if you have one, was written before remote logins, cloud tools, and phishing emails became part of daily business.

When the Systems Stop, the Freight Stops With Them

Freight does not move on trucks alone, it moves on dispatch systems, transportation management software, customs filings and electronic logging devices. An attack on any of those halts physical goods in a way that is immediately visible to every customer waiting on them. In February 2022, the global freight forwarder Expeditors International disclosed in a public filing that it had determined it was the subject of a targeted cyber-attack and had shut down most of its operating systems globally in response, with the result that it had limited ability to arrange shipments of freight or manage customs and distribution activities for its customers. Source: SEC filing.

That disclosure contains the lesson most operators miss: the defensive shutdown was the business interruption. Containing an incident in this sector frequently means stopping the thing that earns the money, and the decision to do it has to be made in hours.

There is no cybersecurity regulator for most trucking, brokerage and warehousing businesses. What there is instead is identity: a freight broker or carrier whose credentials are stolen can be impersonated to book loads, redirect shipments or collect payment, and the first sign is usually a customer asking where their freight went. That makes this a sector where the cyber exposure and the cargo exposure are the same event viewed from two directions.

There is no general cybersecurity regulator for trucking, freight brokerage or warehousing. Obligations arrive instead through customer contracts and through state breach notification law covering driver, employee and customer personal information

Real Questions

Before You Decide

The objections we actually hear from business owners, answered straight.

Do trucking and logistics companies need cyber liability insurance?

The exposure is unusual in this sector because stopping the attack and stopping the business are frequently the same action. Containment often means shutting down dispatch, transportation management or customs systems, at which point freight stops moving and every customer notices within hours. That is a business interruption loss whether or not any data was ever taken.

What is double brokering and why does it matter for cyber?

It is load fraud carried out with stolen identity. Someone using a legitimate broker’s or carrier’s credentials books freight they have no intention of hauling, or re-brokers it and collects the payment. Because it runs on compromised accounts and spoofed communications rather than on a network intrusion, businesses often do not recognize it as a cyber event until they look at how the credentials were obtained.

If our systems are down, is that covered even without a breach?

Only if the wording says so. Many cyber policies trigger business interruption on a security failure, and some also include system failure cover for non-malicious outages. Given how much of this industry runs on third-party platforms, dependent business interruption matters at least as much as cover for your own systems.

Are electronic logging devices and telematics part of the risk?

They are part of the attack surface and part of the compliance picture at the same time. Devices in trucks connect to networks you do not control, report to platforms operated by vendors, and hold location and driver data. An incident affecting them is both an operational problem and a records problem.

Who is liable when cargo is stolen through a fraudulent booking?

It is usually contested between shipper, broker and carrier, and the contracts and the facts decide it. Cargo and liability policies answer the goods; what they generally do not answer is the forensic work to establish how the credentials were compromised, or the claims that follow from the data involved.

What does cyber liability insurance not cover for a logistics business?

It does not pay for the cargo itself, which is a cargo or liability question, and it does not cover contractual penalties for late delivery. It does not replace vehicles or equipment. It covers the incident response, the interruption to your operations, extortion, and the liability arising from data you held.

What Does Your Business Actually Control?

Freight moves on four different kinds of trust. Your cyber exposure follows whichever one you hold: a license, a device, somebody else’s inventory, or a household.

Moving & Storage

Federal rules require you to itemize everything inside a family’s home, tie it to both addresses, and keep it.

Freight Brokers

You have no fleet to steal, so attackers take your identity instead. Why double-brokering is a cyber incident filed under fraud.

Motor Carriers

A federal safety mandate put a continuous location and cargo recorder in every truck, and made you responsible for who can see it.
